WT worked with Purcell Architecture on the refurbishment and extension of the Informatics Teaching Laboratory (ITL) for Queen Mary University of London.
Work included retaining much of the existing structure whilst replacing the façade of the building, which significantly improved its efficiency. A new five-story circulation core was built and two additional floors were added, which resulted in 160 new workspaces for students to support a range of activities, including coursework, group projects, and extracurricular experiments.
The additional two storeys provide 2,760 square metres of additional space – this has increased student capacity from 260 to 450, meeting a growing demand for informatics teaching.
The scheme is targeting a BREEAM Excellent rating and incorporates several sustainability initiatives, including a biodiverse green roof and additional ground-level planting to improve the site’s environmental and ecological value.
