The built environment has a critical role to play in the transition to net zero. At WT, we combine carbon expertise with our core cost and commercial capabilities to help clients understand, measure and reduce the environmental impact of their projects.
Our approach is practical, transparent and aligned with recognised industry standards. By considering carbon alongside cost, design, specification, procurement and long-term asset performance, we help clients make informed decisions that support both their sustainability objectives and wider project outcomes.
Supporting our clients
We work with clients and project teams to embed carbon and sustainability considerations throughout the development lifecycle.
Our services include embodied carbon assessment, carbon benchmarking, option appraisal, carbon reduction strategies and ongoing performance monitoring. By integrating this analysis with established cost planning and commercial methodologies, we can identify where carbon is generated, highlight opportunities for reduction and assess the implications of alternative materials, specifications and procurement strategies.
This allows sustainability to be considered as part of the wider commercial and technical decision-making process, rather than in isolation.
Embodied Carbon Assessment
Understanding where embodied carbon is generated within a project enables clients and design teams to make more informed decisions at an early stage, when there is the greatest opportunity to influence material selection, specification, procurement and overall project outcomes.
WT has developed an Embodied Carbon Assessment service to provide a transparent, practical and repeatable approach to understanding the carbon impact of planned works. The service is closely aligned with established cost planning methodologies and bills of quantities, ensuring carbon is assessed in a way that reflects how projects are measured, costed, specified and delivered in practice.
Using NBS LCA supported by Hubexo product data, we evaluate the materials, products and systems proposed within a project. Assessments consider A1–A3 product stage emissions and, where appropriate, A4 transport emissions to site using recognised guidance.
Our output goes beyond a single carbon total. Elemental carbon summaries allow clients to identify where the greatest impacts occur and review carbon alongside cost, specification and design information.
We can also benchmark projects against comparable schemes to identify carbon hotspots, areas for improvement and opportunities to reduce carbon through alternative materials, revised specifications, procurement strategies or design development.
Working collaboratively with clients, designers and wider project teams, we seek practical opportunities to reduce embodied carbon while considering quality, durability, performance, lifespan, commercial viability and long-term value.
Our Embodied Carbon Assessment service includes:
- Establishing assessment boundaries
- Detailed measurement of materials, components, products and systems
- Assessment of A1–A3 product stage emissions
- Estimation of A4 transport emissions where appropriate
- Elemental carbon summaries aligned with cost planning structures
- Benchmarking against comparable projects
- Identification of carbon hotspots
- Review of alternative materials, specifications and construction approaches
- Comparison of carbon, cost, quality, durability and lifespan implications
- Dashboard reporting to monitor targets, reductions and overall performance
- Practical recommendations to support informed project decisions
Holding ourselves to the same standard
Our commitment to carbon reduction also extends to our own operations.
WT prepares comprehensive greenhouse gas inventories covering Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions in accordance with internationally recognised frameworks including ISO 14064 and the GHG Protocol.
Our emissions data has undergone independent third-party verification in line with ISO 14064-1, providing additional assurance over our reporting methodology, data sources and supporting evidence.
WT is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 and maintains a Carbon Reduction Plan that is reviewed and updated annually against verified emissions data. The plan sets out the initiatives already in place, those underway and the actions planned to further reduce our organisational carbon footprint.
Through both our own operations and the advice we provide to clients, our focus is on credible measurement, informed decision-making and practical action towards lower-carbon outcomes.
