WT acted as P22 Trust Cost Advisor on the new Emergency Department and Acute Medical Unit at Walsall Manor Hospital provides a state-of-the-art healthcare facility designed to enhance patient care, improve clinical efficiency, and support growing demand across the region.
Spanning 6,000m², the development delivers a modern Emergency Department with direct “front door” access to a new Urgent Treatment Centre and Paediatric Assessment Unit. The first floor accommodates a new Acute Medical Unit alongside a Medical Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit, creating an integrated environment for the rapid assessment and treatment of patients.
Delivered within a live hospital environment, the project required careful planning and phased delivery to maintain critical clinical operations and uninterrupted blue-light access. Key enabling works included the creation of two temporary car parks, site-wide high-voltage electrical and medical gas infrastructure upgrades, and a complex programme of phased works.
A significant engineering challenge was presented by historic mineshafts beneath the site. Extensive investigations identified multiple shafts requiring treatment, with 100 tonnes of grout used to stabilise the ground and facilitate the safe delivery of the development.
